Hasina attends Canada governor general’s dinner during G-7 outreach session

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has attended a dinner hosted for world leaders by Governor General of Canada Julie Payette as part of the G-7 Outreach Summit.

The Bangladesh premier joined the dinner on Friday evening at La Citadelle de Quebec.

The dinner was hosted for the heads of the government, heads of state and representatives of international organisations.

Prime Minister Hasina exchanged greetings with South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa, Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, president of Haiti and Caribbean Community Chairperson Jovenel Moise and other guests, said Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali accompanied the prime minister to the dinner. The premier had arrived in Quebec on Friday around 2:00pm local time by an Air-Canada flight.

She was received by the Bangladesh High Commissioner in Canada Mizanur Rahman and Canadian Foreign Ministry Director Jonathon Suvey.

The prime minister is staying at the hotel Chateau Forntenac in Quebec.

Many countries aside from the seven superpowers of the world economy have been invited to discuss on regional development and the economy at the G-7 Outreach Meeting.

The Canadian government invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, other heads of government and several heads of international organisations to the event.

Sheikh Hasina reached Quebec after flying from Dhaka, with stop overs in Dubai and Toronto.

The G-7 Outreach Summit will take place on Saturday. Along with Prime Minister Hasina, Argentine president, the present chair in G-20 Group, Caribbean Community Chairperson Haiti president, Jamaican prime minister, president of Kenya, president of Marshal Islands, Norwegian prime minister, present chair of African Union president of Rwanda, president of Senegal, president of South Africa, Vietnamese prime minister, International Monetary Fund or IMF MD, Secretary general of Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD, UN secretary general and chief executive officer of World Bank have been invited in the summit.

Hasina had joined the G-7 Outreach Summit in Japan in 2016 and in Italy in 2001. The other members in G-7 apart from Canada are France, Germany, Japan, Italy, UK and USA.

The present G-7 Outreach Summit will focus on saving oceans from pollution and finding measures to increase the capability of people living in coastal areas to confront common adversities.

The prime minister will go to Toronto and meet expatriate Bangladeshis following a meeting with her Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau.

She will also meet Canada’s special envoy to Myanmar Bob Rae, Deputy Prime Minister of Saskatchewan Province Jeremy Harrison and Commercial Cooperation of Canada President Martin Zablocki on Monday morning before taking off to home.  

The prime minister is likely to fly on Monday afternoon and reach Dhaka with stop-over in Dubai.
