Alexis Michel Angelo

WINDBER, Pa. – Windber Borough is adding a full-time director to oversee its revamped Grand Ballroom.

Alexis Michel Angelo, a Johnstown native, brings a more than 30-year career in the public relations, communications and hospitality industries both locally and along Florida’s Gulf Coast, borough officials said.

She’s also worked as a wedding planner and certified life coach – and brings a strong “vision” for the Grand Ballroom, Windber Borough Manager Ron Allison said.

“We are very excited to welcome Alexis to our family,” Allison said. “She brings a vision for the future for the Grand Ballroom while highlighting its history.”

Borough officials approved a contract that will pay her $55,000 annually, plus benefits, Allison said.

Windber Borough officials revamped the century-old ballroom into a year-round event space in 2023.

The move is a change for the ballroom’s oversight, shifting from a part-time event coordinator position.

When the coordinator post was vacated earlier this year, Allison said borough officials advertised the part-time opening.

But borough officials pivoted once they reviewed Angelo’s resume – and interviewed her twice about her decades of experience in marketing and wedding planning, he said.

“This is a huge investment compared to the previous (way of running the ballroom). But she has the experience and the background to really take the ballroom in a whole new direction ... and just really make it happen up there,” Allison said.

Angelo said she is delighted” about the opportunity to work in the historic ballroom.

“The Windber Grand Ballroom has a warmth and the light streaming in amongst the beams presents an ambiance and spirit that welcomes and invites,” she said.

Angelo said her vision includes efforts to create positive awareness of the ballroom and enhance the relationship between the space and the community it serves.

As director, her goal is to plan and coordinate Grand Ballroom special events and activities, assist clients with their event rentals and develop special and meaningful sponsorships.

“Our vision with all of these dynamics are designed to create community, and to sustain and preserve the Windber Grand Ballroom legacy,” Angelo said.

Angelo said she plans to work with borough staff and council members to bring the ballroom’s vision for growth to fruition.

Allison said Angelo should be a great fit for the community.

“She is very community- oriented and desires to hear the ideas from the residents of the borough,” he said.

Events planned Several special events are planned for the summer season.

A “Mom and Dad Appreciation” and “Bride & Grooms on a June Afternoon” event are both planned for Saturday, June 27.

A “Christmas in July” and an August “birthday” theme party are also being planned.
