Walmart and Amazon team up to send fans into a frenzy

Shoppers are enjoying the unique benefits of two of America's largest retailers by paying a monthly subscription to both - the number of dual subscribers has doubled in the last four years

More shoppers than ever before are reaping the benefits of two popular subscriptions

As the US economy approaches a time of uncertainty, shoppers are looking to get more bang for their buck in as many places as possible.

Statistics show that more shoppers are opting for subscriptions to more than one supermarket. According to a recent PYMNTS Intelligence report, more Americans than ever are subscribing to both Amazon Prime and Walmart+. Both subscriptions offer their own unique set of perks and discounts, but together, they are even more beneficial.

According to the publication, El Adelantado, in 2021, only about 12% of shoppers had both memberships. In 2025, this number has doubled, to 24%.

According to them, it is millennials who are leading the change. Around 37% of the age demographic are sporting two memberships and enjoying the combined benefits.

Amazon Prime has been the undisputed leader of fast shipping in the US since 2005, with a never-ending catalog of items and an almost immediate gratification. With the subscription, $14.99 a month (or $139 a year), you also get Prime Video, Prime Music, and early access to certain deals.

Walmart+ came a little later, launching in 2020, as the world plunged into a Covid-driven lockdown. The monthly subscription costs $12.95/month - $98 for the year - and offers free grocery delivery, fuel discounts, early access to deals, and a free Paramount+ subscription.

Walmart+ also offers the unique benefit of using the Scan and Go feature when shopping in-store. Amazon Prime does not have the option to see physical items before purchasing.

Years ago, shopping trends showed a much greater emphasis on brand loyalty, but nowadays, the desire for convenience and money-saving opportunities seems to trump that.

Some may still be wondering if it’s worth it to have two similar subscriptions at the same time. According to El Adelantado, people generally opt to use Prime for digital content and electronics, while Walmart is considered useful for everyday items like groceries and household supplies.

The combined cost of the two subscriptions can easily be evened out by the discounts offered at both superstores. If you are using both Walmart and Amazon Prime for grocery shopping, online ordering and media consumption, you are likely getting your money's worth.

Walmart has admitted it is wading into uncertain waters in the wake of Trump's tariffs. Just last week, the president issued a statement saying that retailers should "Eat the tariffs" instead of passing them onto their customers.
