State senators are urging Governor J.B. Pritzker and Democratic leaders to abandon a proposed tax increase, arguing that Illinois' already high taxes are stifling small businesses. The proposed hike, exceeding $6 billion, is expected to further burden these enterprises.

"Illinois doesn't need more taxes. Everyone in Illinois understands that. It needs a government that respects the private sector and a governor that actually understands how the private sector works," said Sen. Jason Plummer, a Republican representing the 55th District.

The senators highlighted that Illinois has one of the highest tax burdens in the nation and ranks last in fiscal stability, according to data from U.S. News and World Report.
