The Cayman Islands National Dance Company Weaves Breathtaking Tapestry of Movement
Over the Emancipation Day weekend, twenty-four company, apprentice, and guest dancers from the Cayman Islands National Dance graced the Harquail Theatre’s stage for their thirty-seventh annual season titled MAJESTIC. Taking place over two evenings (Saturday and Sunday), the show featured almost twenty dance pieces connected by the elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Spirit.
Featuring group numbers, solos and duets, remastered dances and new creations of several different dance forms, MAJESTIC was a collaborative effort, ably led by Ms. Jessica Eden, Artistic Director. “The dancers put in the time, dedication, and hard work to improve their technique and stage presence over the past year. Last weekend’s performances showed their growth. That is what we aim for, for audiences to come each year and be impressed by how we have improved year after year.”
In addition to showing their skilled moves, this year’s show featured eight different choreographers, some creating dances for the first time. “I’ve been attending shows for many years and within the last few years I’ve seen so much growth in the company and dancers each season. Good to see new choreographers coming to the fore. It was an amazing show!” remarked one audience member.
This year’s show featured three male dancers, their presence on stage bringing a much welcomed energy and vibe to the show. “Phenomenal performance yesterday! I was so impressed and brought to tears multiple times.”
MAJESTIC was an extraordinary dance experience that took audiences on a mesmerizing journey through the wonders of nature, the depths of human emotions, and the profound connection between them. Unfolding in five acts inspired by elemental forces (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Spirit), MAJESTIC celebrated the splendour of the natural world, and humanity’s intrinsic bond with it. Through stunning visuals, evocative music scores, and captivating choreography, this production inspired the audience to reflect on their place in, and connection to the world, and to renew their appreciation for the beauty we often miss in our busy lives.
At the end of the weekend, audiences were left amazed at the beauty, strength, grace and variety showcased in MAJESTIC. “[My friends and I] just LOVED the show! We were talking about how Cayman has such great talent, both young and old!”
