Sierra Leoneans from all six Australian states recently came together in Adelaide for their yearly celebration of independence. This year marked 64 years of independence.

The event allows the community to share history, show off talents, and connect. A major part is the football tournament, where teams from each state play to find the champion.

In Adelaide this year, the Canberra Leone Stars played Brisbane in an exciting match. Canberra won the game 5-2.

This win means Canberra needs one more victory, against Sydney, to reach the semi-finals. Team manager Hassan Kuyateh said the players trained very hard. He also noted that Canberra is hosting the event next year, in 2026, and a good result this year “will create a momentum for the boys and the community.”

Augustine Bangura was a key player for Canberra in the win. He showed great skill, scoring two free kicks. Augustine said his goal is to play for the Sierra Leone national team one day and asked scouts to come to Australia to see the skilled players here.

As the Adelaide event finishes, the community feels proud and is looking forward to the celebrations and tournament when Canberra hosts in 2026.
