SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has introduced a new interactive tool to visualize the state's urban tree canopy.

Developed with the USDA Forest Service, this mapping tool displays 2022 urban tree canopy data, covering all metropolitan areas recognized by the 2020 Census.

CAL FIRE officials say tree canopy is vital in California's environmental health, offering benefits such as reducing heat, improving air quality and enhancing property values.

This tool is designed for researchers, policymakers, local governments and the public. It aims to help communities understand and protect urban tree canopy statewide.

The platform provides detailed insights into the scope and changes of California's urban tree canopy, defined as the layer of leaves, branches and stems covering the ground.

CAL FIRE emphasizes the importance of this tool in aiding communities to manage the benefits of urban trees.
